Being a business owner is hard. I take pictures….and I am really good at that, but all the other stuff, well, I am learning.
I started my business the end of 2011. I started much like everyone else starts a hobby, I found something I liked to do, and I did it and LOVED it. Then, people started giving me gifts for taking their pictures, and telling me I needed to charge, so I did.
In 2012, I had a little thriving business. It felt incredible. I would do something I loved, then get a little pocket cash!!! It was pretty amazing!
2013, things really started to grow. I began to get more referrals from my friends and family and began photographing families that were my friends and family’s friends. I also learned that I REALLY needed to start figuring out the business side of things……and that is NOT what I am good at.
2014 was a great year of growth artistically for me. I learned more about my craft, got better at what I was doing, took a LOT of pictures, and got some business systems in place that made my ‘business life’ a lot easier.
This year, things are CRAZY! My hobby, my passion has exploded into the most amazing small business ever! I am busier than I have ever been, shooting 7 days a week, editing in the off time, and learning more about myself than I have in the 40 years I have been alive. I feel alive……but I am also scared. And that is the reality of an artist turned business owner. I don’t want to blow this! I LOVE what I do, and am learning as I go!
Thank you to each and everyone of you that has been a part of this journey. It is because of you, I get to do what I love!!!
So, to the artist that is thinking about becoming a business owner…….DO IT! Just go for it….find a group of people to surround yourself with that will lift you up, encourage you, and help you grow! Find someone that gives you sound and solid advice. PAY YOUR TAXES, get all the necessary business licenses and permits, follow all the rules….be legit! You will feel more alive than you ever have, you will be more tired than you ever have been, and you will work harder than you ever have, BUT it is all worth it!!!!!
In the words of my friend, business mentor, and sounding board…’suck it up and go conquer’. I am lucky to have found a friend like her…….and most of our business talks happen over the most amazing sandwich you have ever tried! but that is for another blog post!
